Shingle Roofing

Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are one of the classic roofing materials that you see on most standard homes. They are an affordable, easy-to-install option that is also easy to repair and replace as needed. You can upgrade from a basic asphalt shingle to a more durable 3-tab or architectural shingle.
However, due to the way asphalt shingles are designed, they are no longer the most durable option on the market today. They can last up to 30 years, depending on what they are exposed to, like wind and sun. But unfortunately, once the granules on asphalt roofing are gone, the whole roof needs to be replaced. One of the first things our sales people look for are you downspouts and gutters, to see if there is something akin to gravel in there, which is actually the granules on your roof coming off.
Unfortunately, even though asphalt shingle roofs typically come with a 30 year manufacturer warranty, most Florida homeowners become surprised when they learn that their insurer is requiring these types of roofs to be replaced every 15 years. Or risk policy cancellation. We know how frustrating this relatively new procedure is becoming, and offer specially tailored financing for home projects.
Metal Shingles
Metal roofing comes in many different forms, like metal shakes and shingles, standing seam metal roofing, and stone coated steel. All are popular Florida homeowner options due to their ability to take a beating from wind and rain, keep moisture away, and provide superior UV protection.
Costs can vary for metal roofing, however, depending on the style you choose. Additionally, metal roofs do provide a good insulator from the heat by refracting the sun’s harmful rays, as such many homeowners tout lowered energy bills.
Different then asphalt shingles, homeowners are not being required to replace their metal roofs every 15 years, hence proving their value of convenience and growth in popularity.

Other Types of Shingle and Residential Roofs
Slate or Shingles
Whether tiles or shingles, there is no denying the popularity of slate as one of the natural types of roof materials for homes. It is beautiful, incredibly durable, and can last for a very long time.
Unfortunately, slate is heavy–meaning not all homes are strong enough to support the weight. They are also expensive, and slate roofs require a specialist to install them, which can be hard to find. Repairs can also be more difficult for slate tiles and shingles.
Wood Roofing Shingles
Not typically found in Florida, but snowbirds may find wood roofing back in your home states. Wood roofing is, without a doubt, one of the most classic types of roof materials around. It is a beautiful, rustic option that is also very durable and provides energy efficiency.
However, wood roofing is a pricey option to order and install and has the added cost of maintenance. Maintaining wood roofing is also labor and time-consuming and, without the required maintenance, the roof can become severely damaged and ineffective.
Green Roofing
OK, so not a shingle and not common in Florida, but becoming more popular in conversations, are the concepts of green or garden roofs. These types of living roofs are excellent in managing water runoff, insulating a home and putting clean oxygen back in the air. While most people would rather opt for solar panels in our Sunshine State, there is something spectacular about a green roof with our abundant humidity and rain.
Most of what hear hear from homeowners who do have a green roof is that the cost of building and maintaining a green roof can add up quickly. Additionally, it requires a lot of maintenance, especially to keep the vegetation alive and well. Still, it’s pretty cool to think about.
